CGI Global has submitted its response to the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) public consultation on proposals to strengthen Malaysia’s corporate governance ecosystem. Among other proposals, SC is exploring enhancing oversight of Company Secretaries of publicly listed companies, recognising their importance to the governance ecosystem and the increasingly strategic nature of a Company Secretary’s role.
CGI is the only provider of chartered credentials for Company Secretaries in the world. In our submission, we propose additional measures to strengthen competency, professional and governance standards for Company Secretaries of PLCs. This could include enhancing competency requirements, introducing a harmonised professional accreditation framework and/or establishing a registration framework. The SC could consider referencing the CGI International Qualifying Programme, delivered in Malaysia by the Chartered Governance Institute of Malaysia (formerly MAICSA), as a gold standard.
